Who was Rahab?
The name of Rahab was chosen because of a very special woman. Like Rahab, you are special and God has a plan and purpose for your life, so let me tell you what made Rahab special and how that can impact your life now in 2011.
Rahab lived in the town of Jericho where she was a sex worker.
(You can read the full story in the Bible in Joshua 2:1-24)
Joshua (leader of God's people) sent 2 men to spy out the land of Jericho. In spite of Rahab's lifestyle, she had an open heart toward God and immediately recognised that the 2 men were Godly and that they were in danger.
Acting in obedience to that inner voice of God in her heart, Rahab risked her life to hide them. Because of this, Joshua spared her life when they conquered Jericho. Rahab later became the wife of one of the Israelites who conquered her land.
It made no difference to God that Rahab was a sex worker, He loved and accepted her, just as He loves and accepts each one of us. But recognising and accepting God's love and forgiveness requires action on our part.
For Rahab it required her to be obedient to God and to risk everything to save the men God had sent into her city.
Rahab's heroic act and faith in God changed her life, her destiny and the destiny of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren down through many generations. Rahab's past was wiped away as though it had never happened. So much so, that God chose one of Rahab's descendents to be a parent to His only son Jesus.
The Bible makes mention of only 4 women in the genealogy of Jesus, and Rahab is one of them.
Many centuries later, Rahab's was remembered and commended in the Bible for her faith as a Godly woman. (Hebrews 11:30-31).
God saw the beauty of spirit and potential of a simple woman trapped by sin and circumstance. Out of love, God gave Rahab the opportunity to hand over her life to Him so that He could give her the amazing and fullfulling destiny that He had planned for her.
If you will trust God with your life, He will do far more than you could ever ask or hope for.
